Dr. Valentin Krastev, Cardilogy Hospital in Veliko Tarnovo: “Covid-19 changed cardiology”
BCI is ready to invest in high-tech medicine, which is beneficial for the doctors in terms of professionalism and satisfaction and for the patients in terms of treatment outcome.
Dr. Krastev, how has COVID-19 changed cardiology and what is the effect on cardiovascular patients?
There have been many changes and most of theme were adverse. First of all, we are seeing an alarmingly increased propensity for thrombus formation in COVID patients – appearance of thrombi literally out of nowhere. In many cases these are localized to sites associated with life-threatening disease, in the vessels of the heart, lungs, lower limbs, etc. And all this is compounded by the potential damage to heart muscle due to SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses. Second comes the problem of late diagnosis in acute conditions such as myocardial infarction.
