History
The Bulgarian Cardiac Institute was founded in 2007 by Tihomir Kamenov, Chairman of the leading Bulgarian healthcare organization – Commercial League Healthcare and Insurance Group, a front running company in the production and marketing of healthcare products, healthcare insurance and marketing innovations.
The Bulgarian Cardiac Institute healthcare investments are focused on the reduction of the cardiovascular mortality and disability rate through the creation of a national structure of highly specialized cardiology hospitals and centers in areas with insufficient access to healthcare.
The first Specialized Cardiology Hospital in Northwest Bulgaria, in Pleven, was opened on 24 June 2008. It introduced the routine invasive treatment for patients with acute coronary syndrome and myocardial infarction for the first time in the region. It provides access to a modern cardiology treatment for patients from Pleven, Lovech, Vratsa, Vidin and Montana regions – for more than 750 thousand people.
The first specialized cardiology hospital in Central North Bulgaria, in Veliko Turnovo, was opened on 31 October 2008. It introduced the routine invasive treatment of patients with acute coronary syndrome and myocardial infarction in the region. It provides access to a modern cardiology treatment for patients from Veliko Turnovo, Gabrovo, Ruse, Razgrad and Turgovishte – for more than 800 thousand people.
The first specialized cardiology hospital in Southeast Bulgaria, in Yambol, was opened on 22 November 2008. It introduced the routine invasive treatment of patients with acute coronary syndrome and myocardial infarction in the region. It provides access to a modern cardiology treatment for patients from Yambol, Burgas, Sliven, Stara Zagora, Haskovo, Kurdjali – more than 1.4 million people.
The first specialized cardiology hospital in Northeast Bulgaria – Varna was opened on 5 November 2009. It introduced the routine invasive treatment of patients with acute coronary syndrome and myocardial infarction in the region. It provides access to a modern cardiology treatment for patients from Varna, Shumen, Dobrich, Silistra – more than 930 thousand people.
The second specialized cardiology hospital in Northeast Bulgaria, in the Ludogorie region – Shumen, was opened on 27 March 2013. It introduced the routine invasive treatment of patients with acute coronary syndrome and myocardial infarction in the region. It provides access to a modern cardiology treatment for patients from Shumen, Razgrad, Turgovishte – more than 400 thousand people.
The first multidisciplinary hospital for a complex treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease in Central North and Northwest Bulgaria – Heart and Brain Center of Clinical Excellence Pleven was opened on 27 February 2017. The hospital is specialized in innovative healthcare technologies in cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, vascular surgery and treats patients from Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Gabrovo, Lovech, Ruse, Veliko Turnovo, Turgovishte, Razgrad, Shumen regions with a population over 1.5 million people.
In only two years, in the ‘small’ ‘Heart and Brain’ in Burgas were performed more than 1300 heart operations and saved thousands of lives, and from mid-November 2021 the hospital began work in a new ultramodern complex, awarded the “Building of the Year 2021”. Heart and Brain Center of Clinical Excellence spread over 9 above-ground and 2 underground floors, on 15,000 square meters of floor space, the high-tech hospital has 330 beds, 14 operating rooms, 13 clinics and wards, and 12 doctors’ reception rooms.
‘Mama and I’ – the first newly built (in over 55 years) maternal and child health clinic in the country – opened its doors in Pleven on June 1, 2023. It occupies a new purpose-built campus of ‘Heart and Brain’ Center of Excellence in Pleven. The high-tech equipped hospital wing has wards of obstetrics and gynaecology, maternity unit, pediatrics and neonatology, specialized pediatric sectors of endocrinology, rheumatology, orthopedics. Expansion of the existing medical genetics laboratory has begun by introducing technological capabilities for molecular genetic diagnosis of rare diseases in children.
The vast investments of the Bulgarian Cardiac Institute in the Bulgarian healthcare, along with the medical teams devoted work, leads to fast and palpable results. The first published results show that the acute coronary syndrome mortality in Northwest Bulgaria for 2008 declined from 13.09% to 9.25%, in-patient mortality went down to 2.99%. One year later, similar results were achieved in the other regions as well.
The salient cardiovascular mortality reduction results in Bulgaria were presented on the World Cardiology Congress in Beijing, China in June 2010 and were published in the world leading scientific journal ‘Circulation’ 122 (2), 2010.
