On <span data-start=\"203\" data-end=\"218\">17 November<\/span>, World Prematurity Day is observed. Today, public buildings, cultural monuments, and landmarks across the country are expected to be illuminated in <span data-start=\"367\" data-end=\"377\">purple<\/span> to mark the occasion.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"401\" data-end=\"768\">\u201cPrematurity is the modern scourge of pediatric healthcare. Globally, around <span data-start=\"478\" data-end=\"509\">13 million premature babies<\/span> are born each year. In Bulgaria, prematurity is still associated mainly with birth weight. <span data-start=\"601\" data-end=\"650\">Not every baby born under 2.5 kg is premature<\/span>,\u201d said Dr. Andrey Hristov, Head of the Neonatology Clinic at <em data-start=\"712\" data-end=\"723\">Mama i Az<\/em> Hospital in Pleven, in an interview for BNR.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"770\" data-end=\"1149\">He recommended that, in cases of expected high-risk delivery, the mother and her family should inquire whether the hospital they have chosen offers <span data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"946\">24-hour neonatology care<\/span>, whether it has <span data-start=\"963\" data-end=\"983\">modern equipment<\/span>, and whether a <span data-start=\"999\" data-end=\"1017\">transfer chain<\/span> is in place in case the baby needs to be transported to a higher-level neonatal unit, as the <span data-start=\"1111\" data-end=\"1148\">first minutes of life are crucial<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1151\" data-end=\"1552\">World Prematurity Day has been observed since <span data-start=\"1197\" data-end=\"1205\">2009<\/span>, an initiative of the <span data-start=\"1228\" data-end=\"1291\">European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI)<\/span> with the support of <span data-start=\"1312\" data-end=\"1322\">UNICEF<\/span> and the <span data-start=\"1331\" data-end=\"1366\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/span>, as a show of solidarity with premature infants and their families. In Bulgaria, the day has been marked since <span data-start=\"1478\" data-end=\"1486\">2012<\/span> at the initiative of the foundation <span data-start=\"1523\" data-end=\"1551\">\u201cOur Premature Children\u201d<\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Between 15% and 20% of babies in Bulgaria are born prematurely.
